Once home to the famous poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, this vibrant town on the banks of the River Otter is steeped in history and today offers a great shopping experience.
It is home to a bugeoning food and drink scene and, of course, the world famous 'Flaming Tar Barrels' that happens each November and inevitably leaves a few brave souls a little singed to say the least!
Right next door to us is Otter Produce who sell local fruit, vegetables and apple juice made by Four Elms Fruit Farm in the neighbouring village of Newton Poppleford. Several doors up is Tina Chauhan aka 'The Samosa Lady' who has brought an authentic taste of India to East Devon through her cooking.
Over the road is the renowned Christopher Piper Wines and not far from him is Robin Rea's specialist charcuterie shop 'The Rusty Pig' which also doubles as a great cafe during the day and a restaurant in the evenings. There's also a fishmonger and bakery. Joshua's Harvest Store, River Cottage and Darts Farm are all close by.
Each June the town welcomes a whole host of new faces as it puts on its 'Food and Families Festival' which takes place over several days and features an eclectic mx of cookery demonstrations, a beer tent, childrens activities and local producers selling their wares.
Around the town is a network of farms, small producers, pubs and hotels. The excellent 'Volunteer Inn' is two doors down from us and they serve the local ale made by Otter Brewery a few miles away. We consider ourselves lucky to be part of such a vibrant and welcoming community and over the last quarter century have done as much as we can to help support it.
